9.19.13- Blog Post Rise of Spain

The Readings are under Test #3- Read the excerpts from Columbus and the Spanish Inquisition and examine the image below.  How do the documents and image relate back to the concept of God, Gold, Glory?  Make at least two thoughtful blog posts before Monday September 23rd 2013.
thanks,

  1. The image can represent the Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish Inquisition tortured and killed thousands of people who were not Christians or who spoke against the king and queen.

  2. "for according from what I could learn from them, there was land at the south as well as at the southwest and northwest and those from the northwest came many times and fought with them and proceeded on to the southwest in search of gold and precious stones..."
This is from the "Voyage of Columbus." It talks about how the natives told Columbus and his men that if they kept going, then they would eventually find riches. The natives only told them that so they would leave them alone; there was no gold.

    1. The natives were smart in these actions. The natives knew how hungry for wealth and greedy Columbus and other explorers were, so they used this to their advantage. The readings discuss how Columbus would pay more attention to natives he suspected of knowing where he could find gold representing his eagerness to come across gold. These natives would send him to fake places in hopes to be rid of Columbus and his followers for a little while.

  3. The above image depicts the harmful persecutions many people faced during the years of the Spanish inquisition. During that time period religion was of up most importance and to be against the King and Queen, or to not be of Christian religion you were going to be persecuted.

  5. The readings about the Spanish Inquisition represent how the church became more strict about certain regulations after the Protestant Reformation further representing the idea of God in the concept God, Gold, and Glory. The readings describe how having relations with a woman other than your wife, altering church litany, and damaging crucifixes of Jesus were all forms of heresy and could result in punishment. The readings about Columbus' voyage describe ideas of God when the writer states that Columbus would be sent on a voyage to represent the state of Spain as Catholic Christians. The readings about Columbus' voyage depict ideas of glory when Spain's heroic defeat of the Moors in Europe is described. Columbus represents Spain's craving of Gold and wealth when he describes his attentiveness towards people he suspected possibly knew where he could find gold. The image represents the idea of God, because it appears that priests are witnessing the killing of a man possibly during the Spanish Inquisition. From this, you can assume the man probably committed a crime involving heresy due to the presence of the priests. The glory of the Spanish church is held up in the murdering of a man who most likely committed crimes involving heresy.
